The Home portfolio is a core strategic pillar of the business with ambitions to scale sustainably while maintaining underwriting quality and insurer confidence.
The Opportunity
This is a Senior Underwriting Role with responsibility for the Home Insurance Book to drive underwriting strategy, risk appetite, and technical decision making for Home, ensuring the portfolio performs in line with agreed objectives and delegated authority requirements.
The role offers genuine influence and the opportunity to shape the development of a growing Home portfolio within a disciplined MGA framework.
Role Purpose
The Senior Home Underwriter role is accountable for the technical underwriting performance and risk integrity of the Home portfolio.
The role ensures that underwriting appetite, rules and decision making are clear, consistently applied and aligned with insurer expectations while supporting controlled and profitable growth.
This role drives underwriting decisions and operates in close partnership with Pricing, Claims and Commercial Operations.
Key Responsibilities
Underwriting Strategy and Appetite
- Define and maintain the Home underwriting strategy and risk appetite
- Set acceptance criteria, referral rules and underwriting guidelines
- Ensure underwriting parameters remain aligned with insurer capacity and delegated authority
- Periodically review appetite in line with performance, market conditions and insurer feedback
Underwriting Decision Making and Oversight
- Own underwriting decision making for Home including complex and referred risks
- Provide technical leadership and guidance on underwriting judgement
- Ensure consistency and quality of underwriting decisions
- Monitor and address underwriting exceptions, overrides and trends
Portfolio Performance and Risk Management
- Monitor underwriting performance, mix and exposure within the Home portfolio
- Work closely with Pricing and Analytics on performance insights and trading outcomes
- Review claims trends and feedback to inform underwriting rules and appetite
- Ensure emerging risks are identified and escalated early
Insurer and Capacity Management
- Act as the primary underwriting contact for insurer partners on Home business
- Support insurer governance, audits and delegated authority reviews
- Ensure compliance with insurer reporting and underwriting standards
- Build strong credible relationships with capacity providers
Governance and Control
- Maintain underwriting audit readiness and documentation
- Participate in underwriting and pricing governance forums as required
- Ensure compliance with internal policies and delegated authority limits
- Work closely with Risk and Compliance on conduct, complaints insight and regulatory matters
Cross functional Collaboration
- Work closely with key stakeholders across the business to support effective execution of agreed initiatives and strategic priorities
- Partner with Claims Management to incorporate claims insight into underwriting decisions
- Support Pricing with underwriting input into pricing reviews and trading discussions
- Engage with Finance on underwriting performance and portfolio insight
Experience / Professional Qualification required
Essential
- Significant underwriting experience within Home Insurance (5+ years)
- CIP Qualification is a pre-requisite for this role
- Senior underwriting or technical leadership experience within an insurer or MGA
- Strong understanding of delegated authority arrangements
- Proven ability to exercise underwriting judgement on complex risks
- Ability to operate credibly with insurers, brokers and senior stakeholders
Advantageous
- Familiarity with broker led distribution models
- Exposure to product development or Home portfolio scaling
- Experience in a growing or evolving MGA environment
